She walked into the small bar in a far-flung corner of the world and immediately spotted a handsome man sitting in a dinner jacket. At the same time, he was inexplicably drawn to a beautiful woman walking through the door. After introductions by mutual friends, they sat next to one another and started discussing the beer list. Little did either of them realise how much that moment – or the whole evening of October 5, 2013 – would change their lives.
They immediately clicked, with that indescribable feeling of excitement and adventure that you get when you just get someone. As their friends dragged them from one loud and noisy space to another, the world faded away into a backdrop as they became more and more lost in their own little bubble, talking the night away.
They were both swept off their feet by each other’s experiences, world view and knowledge. Towards the end of the night, he asked her out on a date – cocktails, a romantic dinner and a night cap at a hidden whiskey bar. It was the date she’d always dreamt of, as though they’d already known each other for years. It felt right. It was magical.
The months flew by as they got to know each other. It wasn’t always easy, but they continued to find solace in one another and supported each other through thick and thin. Inauspiciously, in late April 2014, saddened at the prospect of dropping her home late on Sunday night and not seeing her for another week, he casually asked “should we just go and bring the rest of your stuff?” asking her to move in.
Another year passed before he found out he had to leave Canada and asked if she wanted to try living in Australia. “What’s the worst that could happen?” came as the reply. They left Canada without a permanent home (or visa!) knowing that whatever happened, they’d find a way to make it work. They set out to explore the world together.
After the excitement of travelling, visiting museums, drinking wine in tiny side-street cafes and eating way too much cheese had died down a little, they got news while standing in a museum in Paris – an email from the Australian government – and their hearts stopped. Time stopped. They read the message twice, not quite comprehending it. Her Australian visa had been granted. Nomads no more, it was time to build a home together. Well, almost time, there was still a little bit more of the world to see first!
Their adventure led them to Melbourne, where they found a place they could call home, a city that they loved, and built up group of friends. They’d made it. Soon, he decided to ask her to marry him. In July 2018, he swept her off her feet with a surprise weekend getaway. On one knee with tear filled eyes he asked her to be his wife – how could she ever turn him down? He was always the one for her.
The wedding in June 2019 was an incredible day being surrounded by so many friends and loved ones, and flew by far too quickly. After barely touching down at home for an evening, they were off again on the first honeymoon. Not long after that, they spent a magical white Christmas together - off to explore the world again!
But it's the little adventures that lead to the most growth. Being locked in together and becoming parents to two beautiful puppies have transformed Shru & Chris' lives more than they could have imagined.
